WOMEN TRAVEL FOR PEACE: SENEGAL 2009

MISSION:
Build a community center for the women and children of Kaguit, Senegal

ACTION:

  • Finance the construction of a village community center
  • Participate in the last steps of the construction such as painting and decorating
  • Organize the Inauguration Ceremony with women of the village
  • Plan meetings and conferences  with women of the village
  • Discuss issues important to the women : children and women's health

YOUR VOLUNTEER EFFORTS WILL:

  • Help the local community complete the important project your participation has funded
  • Improve the living and working conditions of local women
  • Involve you in matters related to the rights and expanded capacity of the local women and their community

ITINERARY

Day 1: Fri. Dec. 4—Dakar, Optional Excursion to Île de Gorée

  • Introduction to Senegal via Dakar, the capital city, and its UNESCO World Heritage Site, Île de Gorée (Gorée Island).
  • Dakar is a bustling city of more than 12 million.
  • Optional excursion to Gorée Island, one of Africa’s main points of deportation during the infamous, nearly 300 year-long slave trade. A visit here is unforgettable and highly recommended.
  • Our stay here includes 1 night in Cap Ouest Hotel, one day in Dakar and Gorée Island, and second night on the overnight ferry to Ziguinchor.

Day 2: Sat., Dec. 5— Ziguinchor

  • Morning flight from Dakar to Ziguinchor in southern Senegal
  • Arrival in Ziguinchor; meet local staff of H.E.L.P. Travel, partners of Women Travel for Peace
  • Settle in at Guest House
  • Relax
  • Dinner under a canopy of passion fruit; meal prepared by our private chef

Day 3: Sun., Dec. 6 — Ziguinchor, Village of Kaguit

  • Tour of Ziguinchor, capital of the region of Casamance
  • Visit St. Maur Market
  • Lunch of typical Senegalese cuisine
  • First visit of Kaguit, the village where we will be working
  • Meet village women and see the progress of our project
  • Prepare yourself for an intense reception!
  • Return to Ziguinchor in afternoon
  • Dinner in the garden (all dinners in Guest House prepared by our private chef)

Day 4: Mon., Dec. 7 — Village of Marsassoum

  • Early breakfast and departure
  • Visit Marsassoum, the village of last year’s mission
  • Meet women of the village
  • See the well built by last year’s Women Travel for Peace group
  • Return to Ziguinchor in afternoon
  • Dinner in the garden (all dinners in Guest House prepared by our private chef)

Day 5: Tue., Dec. 8 — Casamance River in pirogue*

  • Breakfast and morning departure
  • Excursion on the Casamance River in pirogue
  • See Birds’ Island
  • Visit Djilapao and Affiniam, villages along the river
  • Lunch in one of the villages
  • Return to Ziguinchor in afternoon
  • Dinner in the garden (all dinners in Guest House prepared by our private chef)
  • * A pirogue is an indigenous type of large, dug-out canoe, used for fishing

Day 6: Wed., Dec. 9 — Mission in Kaguit

  • Breakfast and morning departure
  • Day in Kaguit completing the community center together with the local women
  • Lunch in Kaguit
  • Meetings and encounters with the local women
  • Return to Ziguinchor in afternoon
  • Dinner in the garden (all dinners in Guest House prepared by our private chef)

Day 7: Thu., Dec. 10 — Kaguit: Inauguration of Community Center; Celebration

  • Breakfast and morning departure
  • Arrival in Kaguit
  • Ceremonies begin: Inauguration and Celebration
  • Celebration involves the women of the village and their communities, as well as representatives of Marsassoum, site of last year’s WTP mission
  • This celebration will be unforgettable!
  • Evening return to Ziguinchor
  • Dinner in the garden (all dinners in Guest House prepared by our private chef)

Day 8: Fri., Dec. 11 — Cap Skirring: A Relaxing Day at the Beach

  • Breakfast and morning departure
  • Drive to Cap Skirring, a popular beach on the Atlantic coast
  • Day of relaxing under coconut palms
  • Evening return to Ziguinchor
  • Dinner in the garden (all dinners in Guest House prepared by our private chef)

Day 9: Sat., Dec. 12 — Artesan Market and Flight to Dakar

  • Breakfast and early departure
  • Visit Ziguinchor’s artesan market for last-minute purchases of jewelry, art objects and other souvenirs
  • Fond farewell to your Senegalese friends and to Linda, your escort
  • Flight to Dakar where you will be met and assisted by a WTP representative
  • Flight back home


Day 10: Sun. Dec. 13—Ziguinchor, Ferry to Dakar

  • Leisurely breakfast in Guest House garden
  • Morning to relax, socialize, and finish packing
  • 3 pm departure on overnight ferry to Dakar

Day 11: Mon. Dec. 14—Arrival Dakar, Departure for Home



  • 7 a.m. arrival in Dakar
  • Taxi to the airport
  • Departure flight for home
